Key Takeaways:

  • Swiss state-owned PostFinance has launched Ethereum (ETH) staking for its 2.7 million customers, enabling investments from 0.1 ETH and requiring a 12-week minimum staking period.
  • The service, integrated into existing platforms, highlights transparency and security with native staking directly on the Ethereum blockchain.
  • PostFinance plans to expand its offerings beyond Ethereum, reinforcing its commitment to digital asset innovation in traditional banking.

Swiss state-owned financial services provider PostFinance has announced the launch of Ethereum (ETH) staking for its clients, marking its continued foray into cryptocurrency services. The move, unveiled on January 16, 2025, aligns with the bank’s strategy to integrate blockchain technology into its offerings.

Notably, the state-owned bank’s new ETH staking service is available to its 2.7 million customers, allowing investments starting from 0.1 ETH (approximately $331).

For context, the service requires a minimum staking period of 12 weeks, during which customers can view their staking rewards directly alongside other crypto assets in their account statements. “PostFinance is the first systemically important bank to offer this functionality,” said the Swiss bank in the announcement.

Expanding PostFinance’s Crypto Ecosystem

PostFinance’s Ethereum staking service allows customers to earn rewards by locking ether to support the Ethereum network. This new feature complements the bank’s existing cryptocurrency trading and custody services, which were introduced earlier in 2023. Per the announcement, “The “staking” service is completely integrated into PostFinance’s existing services.”

Highlighting the simplicity and reliability of the new staking feature in the announcement, Dr Alexander Thoma, Head of Digital Assets at PostFinance said, “The “staking” service is based on “native staking”, which takes place directly on the Ethereum blockchain and thus offers maximum transparency and security.”

PostFinance revealed that its new staking functionality is now accessible via e-finance and the PostFinance app, exclusively supporting Ethereum for now.

The banking firm reportedly emphasized that Ethereum is currently the sole cryptocurrency eligible for staking on its platform. Still, there are plans to expand the offering to include additional cryptocurrencies in the near future.

PostFinance: Driving Innovation in the Financial Sector

With this latest development, PostFinance aims to attract a broader customer base while fostering the integration of Web3 technologies into traditional banking services.

PostFinance’s Ethereum staking service is part of its broader strategy to expand its digital asset portfolio, a move expected to accelerate the adoption of blockchain-based solutions among Swiss customers.
