In addition to his faculty position, Gensler will co-direct the FinTechAI@CSAIL program, a research initiative at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory.

Gensler’s SEC Tenure and Criticism
Before returning to MIT, Gary Gensler served as the Chairman of the SEC under the Biden administration. His leadership saw an increased focus on cryptocurrency regulations, which led to enforcement actions against crypto firms.
His tenure, however, attracted criticism from lawmakers, including Senator Cynthia Lummis, who argued that the SEC had overstepped its bounds in regulating the crypto space, claiming Congress did not authorize these actions.
A Storied Career in Public Service and Finance
Gary Gensler’s career spans several key roles in government and finance. Before his time at the SEC, he served as Chairman of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) during the Obama administration.
He played a role in addressing the $400 trillion swaps market after the 2008 financial crisis. Gensler also spent 18 years at Goldman Sachs, where he held responsibilities in mergers and acquisitions, fixed-income trading, and finance.
